Grant's Biography

Grant Sible

Grant Sible has been an avid outdoorsman since growing up in Iowa and Minnesota. He has lived and trekked all over the world before settling in Austin, Texas. Though growing up 'in town', he spent all his spare time in the woods, and his passion for outdoor places continues to this day. He has lived in Mammoth, San Francisco, Quito, North Carolina, and Florida, but has called Austin home since 1992.

Grant has packed a lot into his 44 years to date. He has hiked in Patagonia, the Alps, Peru, Bolivia, Ecudor, the upper Amazon cloud forest and the Amazon basin forest. He thru-hiked the Appalacian Trail in 2002, and has hiked extensively in the White Mountains and the western Sierra. In between his terra firma adventures, Grant has been scuba diving in New Guinea, Indonesia, Gallapagos (3 times). He has summitted diverse Ecudorian peaks, including Cotopaxi at 19,400 feet. He has canoed the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, and on the Amazon River and tributaries. He has fished for pirahna (which he said were quite tasty) and wrestled crocodiles (he let them go afterwards).

Grant's base pack weight on his first trip out with Glen in December 2005 was under 7 lbs, a personal best. His next trip, unless he has to test heavier gear, he swears his base pack weight will be under 6 lbs. His salary includes incentives for verified lowering of pack weight (not really).

Grant completed a course of study at Deep Springs (DS 79), a small liberal arts college in California. He also took courses as a studio arts major at San Francisco State. Grant has taught 8th grade studio art in South America, has restored Victorian homes in San Francisco, has been a professional cowboy of 1000 Herefords in the White Mountains of California, has milked cows, and kept bees. Most recently, Grant has been running a real estate investment partnership which does high end remodeling/restoration.

Grant joins Gossamer Gear as President in 2005, when founder Glen Van Peski brought in some equity partners so he could take a less active role. Grant brings a passion for the outdoors and diverse business skills to bear on the challenge of taking Gossamer Gear to the next level.
