Oregon Pacific Crest Trail - 2006

Glen joins Strider and Friends for the Pacific Crest Trail through most of Oregon. Total of 262 miles in 10 trail days.

Glen jumped at the chance to Strider and friends Irish, Cowboy, Flatch and Mr. Wizard for a piece of their 2006 PCT section hike. They had started at Snoqualamie and hiked north to Canada, then returned to hike south from their starting point. Various hikers had joined the core group for portions of the hike. By the time Glen joined them September 1 at Cascade Locks, on the Washington/Oregon border, they had been on the trail for 6 weeks. Glen was counting on his long legs and light load to enable him to keep up, as he was coming off the couch, so to speak (exercise is not part of his current routine). This was a unique trip in that for this section of Oregon, there were many road crossings, and a scattering of lodges on the trail. Princess and Ma providing trip support provided some pleasant pampering in between the fast-paced hiking.

The road crossings allowed for relatively frequent resupply, minimizing the food weight carried, and also allowed for different gear configurations for different segments. Glen was typically sub-5 lbs., but went sub-4 for one section, trying no-cook foods from Adventure Foods, leaving the camera behind, and swapping out the prototype "1-lb. tent" shelter for the Wedge-C.

Glen's Gear List

Please lighten your load responsibly. Never take less gear than required for your particular trip, experience level, and travel group. These are all experienced ultralight backpackers.

An early start from the Best Western at Cascade Locks. Cowboy downs a quick Gatorade for the trail. Flatch is checking out Strider's G5. Heading up the Eagle Creek Trail, popular alternate route of the PCT in this area.
Tunnel falls is spectacular, and the trail crosses in a tunnel right behind it! You can just spot the trail and opening on either side. It was a very scenic walk up the canyon, with some beautiful fall colors.
Glen standing at the tunnel exit. There was a lot of uphill today, in fact most of the first day was uphill. Here cowboy moves his short legs in high gear up an incline.
Mr. Wizard stops at a cairn to take in the expansive views. Glen with Mt. Hood in the background. With warm weather for this section, he's wearing a nylon supplex ventilated shirt. The pack is a Whisper modified to include side pockets and a pad holder.
The volcanic nature of the area made for some spectacular scenery. The first day ends at Salvation Springs, and Glen sets up his prototype shelter he's testing for this leg of the trip.
