Get to Know the New Hipbelt Fit Options on the Mariposa + Gorilla Backpacks
Share
In March 2024, we announced some exciting new changes to the Mariposa 60 and Gorilla 50 backpacks, including redesigned load lifters, updated colorways, and our patent-pending PVT Frame+Belt system. We also listened to our customers about sizing needs and used that feedback to offer alternative hipbelt options for both packs.
In case you missed it, the Mariposa 60 and Gorilla 50 hipbelts now come in two different fits and multiple sizes. They’re designed to hug your body for optimum weight transfer. Below, we dig into the details of this change and how to select the perfect fit for you. Get ready to say hello to less chafing and more comfort.
How Have the Hipbelts Changed on the Mariposa and Gorilla Backpacks and Why?
The hipbelts on the Mariposa 60 and Gorilla 50 backpacks have been updated to work as part of our patent-pending PVT Frame+Belt system. This system uses an aluminum, closed-shape frame that slips into a pocket on the back center of the PVT Hipbelt. The frame and hipbelt work together to allow your pack to move with your natural gait. As your hips and pelvis tilt and rotate with your hiking stride, the lower end of the frame is free to move back and forth within the pocket. The PVT Hipbelt comes with:
- Two large zippered hip pockets
- Straight or curved fits in five sizes for greater size and shape inclusivity
- Center pocket to accommodate the PVT Frame
- Foam-cushioned comfort
- Sturdy weight transfer wrap
- Tough recycled Robic fabric
We updated our hipbelts to accommodate this new system. However, that’s not the only update we made. Our design team also reviewed the fit and sizing of our belts.
Bodies aren’t one-size-fits-all. Everyone comes in different proportions and everyone deserves to have gear that’s comfortable for them. With this in mind, Gossamer Gear now offers our PVT Hipbelt in two different fits: straight and curved. These fits consider different waist-to-hip ratios.
They also come in multiple sizes for additional customization. The straight-fit hipbelts are offered in small, medium, and large. The curved-fit belts are offered in two sizes: S/M and M/L.
How Do I Figure Out My PVT Hipbelt Fit and Size?
Start by figuring out your hip measurement. Find your iliac crest by cupping your hip bones on both sides (check out our blog on how to size and fit a backpack for more information). Then, wrap a soft measuring tape or string around the top of your iliac crest. This will tell you your hip measurement.
Next, determine your waist measurement. Using the same soft measuring tape or string, find the smallest part of your midsection—typically 1 to 2 inches above your belly button—and measure around that area. This will tell you your waist measurement.
Then, calculate your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. If the result is 0.85 or lower, you will likely need a curved hipbelt. If it is higher than 0.85, you will likely need a straight hipbelt.
Finally, use your hip measurement to select the right size.
For the curved belt, order a S/M size for hip measurements between 28.5 inches and 56 inches, and the M/L size for those between 32.5 inches and 60 inches.
For the straight fit, anticipated sizes correspond with the following hip measurement ranges:
- Small: 26 inches to 53.5 inches
- Medium: 30 inches to 57.5 inches
- Large: 34 inches to 61.5 inches
If you’re unsure which hipbelt shape will fit best, we recommend purchasing both a straight and curved fit to dial in what works best for you. Everyone’s anatomy is different.
What Hipbelts Come Standard on the Mariposa and Gorilla Backpacks and How Can I Select a Different Option?
If you order a Gorilla 50 or Mariposa 60 backpack in size small, it automatically comes with a S/M curved-fit hipbelt. If you order one of the packs in medium or large, it will come with a medium straight-fit hipbelt.
However, you can always swap out the standard belt for another size. The process for getting a different sized PVT Hipbelt is to add the additional desired belt to your order, switch the hipbelts on your pack at home, and then return the original belt for a $25 refund.
