Sizing & Fit
Torso length: Start at the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck. The best way to find this is to bend your neck and feel the first bump along the base of your neck. This bump is where you will want to start your measurement. Next, you'll want to find the midpoint between your iliac crest. To find your iliac crest, cup your hipbones on both sides and find the center point on your spine. This midpoint is where your thumbs should be pointing. Finally, you'll need help measuring from the C7 vertebra to your iliac crest. From there, you'll have your torso measurement.
Small: 17" - 19" Medium: 19.5" - 21.5"+ If you're in between sizes, you will want to + Size down for more of a shoulder wrap and higher hipbelt + Size up for a lower hipbelt fit

I like this bag, quite a lot actually. I do think the 4.7 width is a bit hard to work this, though. I do have my gear pretty dialed in so I can make this work as a weekend bag comfortably but probably not too much longer 4 days before I would need to resupply. I primarily use it as a long day hike or winter hiking bag. It's very comfortable, I love how easily the hip belt can come off or be added. If you are going to use this for backpacking or fastpacking be sure you have your gear is dialed in really well or this will be too small for you. 10/10 would recommend!
I purchased the Kumo after hiking the Colorado Trail and PCT with my Gorrilla 40 liter. My Gorilla 40 is an amazing pack (that lasted me around 3500 trail miles and still going), but I wanted something smaller. My base weight is 9.5lbs and I can get 6/7 days of food in the Kumo when packed efficiently. Hoping to take it on the CDT in 2027!
Bought small Kumo 36s (in beautiful yellow!) for our sons’ first Sierra trip. They are both well under 5 feet tall and 70-85 lbs. Rather than getting mainstream kid packs, we opted for investing in lightweight gear and it worked wonderfully. Test hikes and the real thing: 4 miles and 2,000+ vertical carrying 10-12 lbs in Sequoia — as well as day hikes and descent. Both said they were comfortable and really enjoyed the packs. And we should get several years out of them. (My buddy even said he liked the functionality better than his MLD!)
I just got this ultralight pack and it is my first time buying from Gossamer gear. Shipping was super fast! First impression was how am I going to fit the gear in for hiking the TMB hut to hut for 10 days,..once I had it packed though, my thoughts were what in the Mary poppins purse, is this magic? I think this pack will more than deliver and has already exceeded my expectations. I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg for a ultralight pack like other brands out there and this was so reasonably priced, I had to check it out. I’ve already bragged about this brand and pack so 10/10 would recommend
Spent 17 days August 2024 on the JMT, with bear canister! Also, carried my Kumo for 500 miles on the Camino in Spain and Portugal. Really comfortable, light and durable!
I use it mainly for travel within Europe by rail. It is lighter and has more functionality than conventional = heavy backpacks (>1 kg).
It will also replace my trolley when traveling by air and discipline me in carrying less stuff with me.
As I need a smaller backpack at the final destination I carry the Minimalist 19 in my Kumo 36 which fits perfectly.
So it is my version of the "US Dream Team".
This pack is sweet. I have it loaded out with the below and it’s super comfortable. I’m really surprised coming from a framed pack. I filled out with all my gear and have plenty of room for food, water, and clothes. It feels quality. Shoulder pockets for my phone and sunglasses. I love it.

Maiden outing with the Kumo - I scored 30 whole minutes of solitude at this waterfall by getting there early!
The pack has all the features I love on my Gorilla, but smaller and slightly less structure for day hikes or a single overnight. I did swap out the sit pad with the upgrade pad I got with my Gorilla.
I'm so glad I took a chance and ordered my first pack from GG!
My fourth GG pack and by far my favorite. Perfect size and capacity for 3-4 day hikes. Fully loaded total weigh is 22 lbs. Replaced the back sit pad with the thin light rolled pad and use a GG tarp as the back pad, seat cushion and shelter. Love this set up. I believe I could push it to almost 30lbs. But I’m getting old and don’t want to carry that weight anymore.
It is also perfect for day hikes. I keep it in the car fully stocked and ready to go along with the minimalist (19ci) for shorter day hikes. GG is the best when it comes to UL value and durable gear.
Love this pack - its a game changer. Its light, has nice large pockets and very comfortable. After hiking several days over a long distance - I experienced no back aches.
LOVE IT! Needed something smaller than my Mariposa 60. Looked at lots of other brands but decided to stay with GG. So glad I did! Super light, roomy, space and organization to take all my basic SAR gear!! Never disappointed with this brand.
Personally, I think it's a bit small for overnighters, but for day hikes it is perfect year round. I'll use my Gorilla 50 for overnighters. Super comfortable.
I first read about your packs in Kim Stanley Robinson's book on the Sierras. I just spent a week in that area with my new Kumo 36 and I loved it. For the first time in years my back didn't hurt after a long day and the ergonomics of the pack are a delight. Second day out we did Mt. Whitney and boy was I glad to have this pack! It was a spectacular day and I felt great throughout. Thanks for your thoughtful, wonderfully lightweight design. I had several hikers ask me about it!
Perfect Camino pack! Can’t say enough about the suitability of its volume, its comfort and flexibility with different loads. No extra bells and whistles. Just great quality and comfort. I’ve now used 3 different packs on various Caminos and this is the one I’ll always use from now on!
Seems to be exactly what I was looking for. I haven’t had a chance to put it thru its paces yet but I look forward to taking it on a couple day hikes and a couple solo overnighters.
Heck I might even give it a go as my airline personal item since without the back pad, it would be able to squish into any sizer.
Kumo 36 > Wanted / needed pack larger than Gossamer Minimalist, but smaller than Ohm, super nice pack for a hike / bike in Black Hills South Dakota or anywhere.
Small but mighty. I’m older…60s and doing my best to keep overnighting. Ultralight products are a game changer. This pack is incredibly sturdy. I stuffed it, stretched it, pulled on seams to get in my sleeping bag (need a lighter one), NeoAir, clothes, dog food/bowl/bed…and human food…oh and a book, raincoat…you get the drift. All the pockets are amazingly useful. Highly adjustable, comfortable. I took a risk buying such a small pack but I don’t hike alone overnight, so others are carrying shared stuff and I knew I had a weight limit of 20-25lbs. This pack is perfect so far. I was a little put off by some of the seemingly “dainty” aspects, clips, straps, but really not a problem.
And it is good looking. LOL. Love the grey with the red accents. Thank you!

After 3 months, holes in the mesh pockets. And hole in the front pocket. And holes in bottom of the bag. The fabric is fragile, if you are for a north east hiker.
Love the Kumo. Fit is great. It's the first pack that I can get the water bottle in and out of the side pockets without taking the pack off. The stretchy shoulder pocket fits my phone and snacks for easy access. It is now my go to pack for day hikes.
All I know is that my son really wanted this backpack for Christmas. He is into hiking and I am quite certain he did his homework before requesting this particular item. The backpack is very light considering the size of it.
I was so impressed dealing with Gossamer Gear. They quickly replied to a question via email and offered a link to make the purchase in Canada. I looked at both sites and decided to order with Gossamer Gear in Austin TX. There was a discount which covered the shipping cost and duty. I received the item within 24 hours once I ordered online. I was impressed and recommend dealing with them.
Used for 6 years
I travelled for 6 years around the world with just this pack, living out of this pack. Doing some hikes and just using it for day to day living. It did eventually fall to bits (partly to animal attack in havasupai) but it went through a lot and was the best pack I've ever had. I'm getting another one.
Gossamer Kumo on the PCT
I have just completed the Pacific Crest trail 2023, walking over 2,500 miles and I used the Gossamer Kumo all the way.
It was excellent pack if you have lightweight kit. However my kit still included a double-skin tent, down sleeping bag, air mattress and foam pad. The Kumo also held a full cook system, basic electrics, first aid and spare clothes. I had a solar panel strapped to the top and I kept 2 litre bottles of water in each shoulder pad pocket. At a squeeze I could also carry 5 days of food inside the pack as well.
The only down side was that the mesh rear picket was not very durable and soon got numerous holes in it.
It’s a great pack and if I can’t fix the mesh pocket I will be buying another Kumo 👍
Near perfect, durability for mesh
I have to say this bag is so close to perfect. I love the oversized side pockets and mesh front. I wasn’t sure that I would but I found them incredibly helpful and certain items were easy to grab without taking off my bag. It is light, functional, no chaffing on the shoulder straps and I really like the detachable hip belts (which was a bonus when checking my bag as luggage). I had many questions about it while hiking Kilimanjaro as people had traditional frame packs with a heavy base weight and I would recommend it to anyone despite below.
There are two things I do not love about the bag
1. I wish it had a designated pouch to hold my hydration bag. I had to constantly remove items in order to put the bag in and have it sit flush against the back. The Loris has this and it works great.
2. The mesh pouch on the front of the bag has small rips after my first 8 day trek. I don’t think I was overly hard on the bag so I do question its longevity over time. Because the mesh is so fine I’m having a hard time deciding how best to patch it.

just finished my first long hike with it, 6 days in the tour du beaufortain (frech alps), the pack was perfect for me (20 pounds of gear, food and water) works very well with chrome umbrella.
Great adventures with it
I got this bag for my trip in Everest base camp in 2022 as a daypack. Brought the same bag at the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2023. This bag is always with me for my day hikes. It is extremely light, but it is really tough and solid. Taking it again for my upcoming mountains in Asia. Looking forward to taking it to more outdoor adventures.
We get it…Gossamer Gear makes perfect packs
I’ve spent the last 5 years dialing in my gear to reduce size and weight. I’ve gone from a Kelty external frame pack to a Deuter 65L internal frame, then to an Osprey 50L. Every step resulted in a better backpacking experience.
I eventually decided to make the jump into frameless packs when my baseweight got to be between 10 and 12 pounds. After much research got the Gossamer Gear G4-20…and it was perfect! More comfortable than any pack I ever had. But I kept upgrading gear and found myself with a lot of extra room in the 4-20 in 3 season use.
So I looked at the Kumo…and it is perfection. With a baseweight of around 9-10 pounds, the pack carries extremely well even without the waist belt. I replaced the back pad with a cut down section of the 1/8 pad from GG. It has just enough room for 5 day carry…even if it needs a bear can (my BV450 straps in well).
I am constantly impressed with the products Gossamer Gear puts out. The stuff works. It has nothing extra…just enough to be flexible.
I couldn’t recommend the Kumo more. It’s a fantastic pack for anyone who has meticulously fussed over their gear selection and want a quality ultralight pack.
Perfect pack!
This is my go to pack for most adventures now. I love the chest strap- it gives me a place to organize my phone, chapstick, snacks, sunglasses, all the things, without having to take my pack off. the zip pocket is large enough to fit my iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The chest vest gives it extra comfort when running with the pack on - similar to a running vest. Making it a true fast pack!
Features that I especially love (other than the chest strap!): the ice axe loop, the mesh pocket (great for stuffing jackets, snacks, climbing helmet, and also great for drying wet gear)
Great pack
I was looking to downsize from my Mariposa 60 and the Kumo does the trick. I have done two -five day section hikes with a total of 22 pounds including food and water and the Kumo is very comfortable. It will be my go to for lighter, less bulky loads. When I need to carry a bear can or winter gear, I will go back to my Mariposa.
AT Sobo pack
I carried the Kumo (minus hip belt) for my southbound hike of the AT last year ('22) and LOVED it! Even when I overstuffed this thing with snacks, it held up like a champ. After living out of this for 4.5 months, it still looks great, doesn't completely reek, and I'm confident I could get another thru hike out of it.
I did replace the sit pad with the 1/8" foam, which folded nicely into the back pockets. One of my trail family got a Kumo part way on the trail and GG just changed the sit pad to include the logo...which unfortunately chaffed his back. :(
My only regret is that I bought it before the release of the purple edition.
