Gear Notes

Three-piece carbon fiber construction at 178 g per pole, folding down to 38 cm and extending from 115 cm to 130 cm through a single locking section.

The custom-molded EVA foam grip and adjustable nylon wrist strap keep pressure off your hands on long efforts.

Carbon fiber rewards confident, straight-on loading, which is exactly how you should use it on the trail. Rinse the shafts clean after muddy or salty days and loosen the clamp before long-term storage, and they'll stay crisp mile after mile.

The shelter icon on the shaft is calibrated to our One and Two ultralight shelters for a fast, confident pitch. Using a different shelter? Start at the icon and adjust from there.

FAQ

How quickly can I deploy the FT3 poles while on the move?

Fast enough to keep your momentum. Pull them from a pocket, unfold, and lock in seconds — no twisting sections or digging through pack straps. When the grade eases, they fold back up just as fast.

Can I use the FT3 poles to pitch my Gossamer Gear shelter?

Yes. The shelter icon on the shaft is calibrated to our One and Two ultralight shelters for a fast, confident pitch. Extend to the icon, stake out, done. Using a different shelter? Start at the icon and adjust from there.

How durable are carbon fiber folding poles? Should I be worried about durability?

Carbon fiber rewards confident, straight-on loading, don't use them to catch a fall or lever against rocks at odd angles. With proper use they're trail-tough. Rinse after muddy or salty days, loosen the clamp before storage, and they'll stay crisp mile after mile. Note that carbon fiber breakage is not covered under warranty.

What's the difference between the FT3 and the LT5?

Deploy speed vs. adjustability. The FT3 is built for fastpacking and trail running when you need to grab your poles quickly as terrain changes. The LT5s are telescoping with a wider length range, better suited for all-day hiking where poles stay out most of the time. Move fast and frequently stash your poles? FT3. Poles out all day? LT5.

Are the FT3 poles carry-on friendly?

Yes, that's one of the biggest advantages of a folding design. The FT3 folds down to 38 cm (about 15 inches), which fits easily in most carry-on bags and personal item backpacks. No more checking a bag or shipping poles to your trailhead. We recommend using the boot covers on the tips before packing them. Success can vary depending on the TSA agent, please check your airline's policy before flying.

Customer photo review of FT3 Folding Trekking Poles

Fragile. Broke on the very first trip. I slipped on some loose scree- precisely the situation you need trekking poles for – and it snapped like a toothpick.

I got these for an upcoming trip to Europe and couldn't be happier. Aside from being LAF and well made, they fit easily in my luggage! Gossamer rocks! Keep up the good work

FT3 Folding Trekking Poles

bought them for the ability to fold for airplane travel. worked great when climbing Mt Elbert in colorado. now taking them to nepal in october for everest base camp trek. being very light and foldable are 2 great features. adjustable height for hiking and for use as pole for tent also makes them very useful.

FT3 Folding Trekking Poles

I'm always on the lookout for lighter options and poles are something I always bring so I bought these to try. The construction is good and so far they've survived 30 rugged miles but they arent without some small complaints. The first issue I've encountered is the strap holds well when using the pole for leverage to pull up but slips constantly anytime its over the handle such as letting the pole dangle to climb up or down a steep section of trail. I find myself having to re-tighten the straps every hour or two on steep terrain, something I never have to do with BD poles. On smooth grades they're ok. The second issue, and its more of a feature complaint, is the permanent half basket/tip GG chose doesnt protect the lower pole shaft from swing strikes. Because its a foldable pole the sections rotate constantly and part of what a basket does (IMO) is act as a bumper to protect the thin pole end from striking rock. The half basket is more or less kind of useless in this regard because it only works half the time (the sections constantly rotate in use). I'm not sure why they went to this design over the pole tip they've used for years on the LT3 which worked with many types of baskets. I ended up replacing the tip entirely for a weight penalty of 6g per pole (including a minimalist screw on 38mm basket). Otherwise they're good poles. Same grip as the LT3 that many favor. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a ultralight foldable pole but they're definitely open to some small improvements.
