We won a permit to hike the Wave, coyote Butte in Utah/Arizona and it was the hardest hike we’ve been on. It was so hot. We started at 4am because of the heat and it was 101 degrees when we finished. I honestly believe we wouldn’t have made it out on our own steam if it hadn’t been for the Gossamer Gear umbrella and system. We were grateful to have them since we are both in our 70’s. Thank you for such a wonderful product.
I really love the light weight. Encourages me to bring it when I might otherwise leave it home. I love it for the sun, and works well in the rain. Most excited about working hard in the rain with it, because rain jackets suck for that.
I used this umbrella with the extra clamp during a 10 day trek at Philmont in June/July of 2025. I wore the umbrella on my pack's shoulder strap during use and stowed it with the handle between the hip pocket and hip belt and the top secured by a trekking pole strap on my Osprey Aether 85 shoulder strap. Our first day on the trail we hit rain & pea-sized hail which the umbrella shrugged off easily while keeping me mostly dry. During this portion of the trek we were hiking through woods/forest and the umbrella had numerous 'encounters' with tree branches despite trying to avoid them. The umbrella took it like a champ with no holes or tears. Two days of our trek were though burn scar and an exposed slope, neither with shade. The umbrella provided great shade for most of my upper body allowing me to remove my hat and feel significantly cooler than the rest of our crew. There were some minor 'wear' marks through the silver coating after the trek from where the trekking pole strap kept the upper part of the umbrella secured, but this did not appear to affect the performance at all. I will note that with a large backpack there was some minor interference with the edge of the umbrella & the top of my very full pack. This would not be an issue with a typical daypack and didn't affect the umbrella's performance at all. I thought the shaft could have been around 4" longer to improve forward visibility during use. To look up at anything, even in the distance, I would have to adjust the umbrella farther behind my head with my hand. I'm aware that this would increase the umbrella's length and weight though. With a smaller backpack you could shift the mounting clip & strap farther up to alleviate this without rubbing on the backpack.

I just bought two more bronze/gold umbrellas for gifts for my extended family of hikers! This past summer..my multiday hikes on portions of our GDT in Kootenay and Banff Nt'l parks, as well as Mt. Assiniboine Provincial park in BC..were very hot in the open Rockie Mtn alpine. My transiting through Sunshine Village ski area's summer operation on a busy Saturday, with this amazing cooling system, gleaned many photos and questions to its source. I think your online sales that day may have spiked!
Hike R2R at the Grand Canyon! So much relief under the umbrella! It attached to my running vest so it was hands free! I wouldn’t be without it now! Love how lightweight it is! Recommend 💯
This umbrella saved me on an 94 degree day, and literally everyone I passed on the trail commented on how smart it was to have this. I don’t do well in the heat usually but I was totally fine thanks to the shade this provided. I bought the umbrella clip kit too and the umbrella kept in place well. I’m pretty tall and my head did not hit the umbrella. I also got to test the umbrella in the rain because it rained the next day! Kept me dry. It’s so light so the tall length of it really didn’t bother me because I can fit it in the deepest side pocket of my Mariposa 60 pack/secure the top with bungee cord. If it were collapsible that would = more weight, so I’m happy with it as is.
The reflective umbrella leaves your head exposed to the breeze, not the sun. Also keeps your pack and water bottles cooler.
I’m on the left with my Gossamer gear and my friend had a different brand on the right. Mine was lighter and handled better in the wind and the hands free straps worked great. Made the hike out of the Grand Canyon with over 100 degrees temps bearable. I wished it collapsed smaller but for the strength and light weight, I can live with the length
I used this umbrella in Phoenix, AZ, on a day when it was about 111 degrees. I was impressed by the light weight of the umbrella and the height as well. It was also easy to attach to my backpack strap with the addition of another mini bungee cord. It wiggled as I walked, but this did not bother me because the umbrella is so light. One gust of wind from the front caught the umbrella, so I thought I might add another bungee in the back in case a gust came from there, to hold the umbrella in place. It kept me shaded and I’m really happy with it.
Used my umbrella at Havasupai. It definitely kept me cooler in the hot Arizona sun. Next stop is Appalachian trail!
I haven't used it yet, but the umbrella is very lightweight and seems sturdy and well-built even compared to much heavier umbrellas. The opening mechanism is simple and intuitive. I can't wait to use the umbrella for my own personal shade on hot, sunny hikes (my main purpose in buying it). I will update my review once I've actually deployed it in the field!
Works well in the Arizona desert, sure seems a few degrees cooler under it. The handsfree holder quickly attached to the shoulder strap.

This umbrella is worth its weight in gold. Being under it in the otherwise open sun, I can physically feel a temperature difference that makes a huge impact on my comfort level. I will use this for everything from hiking, to music festivals, to Burning Man. A great investment!

I’ve been purchasing gear from gossamer since 2004. This hiking umbrella is replacing my six moons design umbrella, which is finally on its last leg. This new umbrella is much lighter. Shipping could’ve been quicker, but it is what it is.
I love how lightweight this umbrella is. My family claims using it makes me look even shorter than I am and it makes my personal space bubble wider, but it's worth it for the cooler air. I've used it on a couple of different little hikes. Definitely cooler under the umbrella. It's very lightweight. Winds haven't been crazy, but it's done fine with any breezes that it catches. I like it when it catches breezes as the cooler air flows by my head. I'm very happy with my purchase. It has helped a lot with our trip to Colorado with the high temps getting around 100.

I lived in Japan for 2 years. While bike riding Shikoku year round in its semi-tropical weather, I quickly learned that rain suits just left me equally as wet with sweat as I would get from the rain. I learned to always carry an umbrella to keep my upper body dry while riding. Japan has passed new laws making it illegal to ride a bike while "holding" an umbrella. I like the ultralight design of this umbrella, and I especially like that there is a mount that allows me to secure it to my pack straps to keep both of my hands free while using it. I will update my review once I have used it on the trail for a bit. I will probably pair it with an ultralight rain kilt for my legs when I am bikepacking.
Purchased for my 19 year old Granddaughter who taking up backpacking with me. She can't wait to try it out. She's been hiking in rain gear an hates it. Like everyone else. She likes the fact it attaches to her pack.
Great umbrella. I carried it for a week of hiking in the summer sun in Croatia, but also used it on rainy days while walking the Pennine Trail in northern England. It's lightweight and versatile. I already bought another one for a gift.
I had NO idea how light this umbrella was. I fought buying it for years, but when I booked my first long thru-hike I knew I would need it for the exposure. Gossamer Gear NEVER disappoints!
I’ve bought two of these umbrellas (one for backup) and use them often on hikes with full sun. They are big enough for good shade protection but not too big. It can also be attached to my backpack strap for hands free use while hiking.
Nice! Used at a 95 degree 3pm outdoor wedding with no shade! Lightweight and definitely helpful. Will look forward to hiking with our umbrellas.
I feel 10-15F cooler under a sun-brella than just wearing a sunhat. I also like it for hanging on a sparse desert bush or high-altitude tree for a solid spot of shade in which to have lunch or take a nap. This is quite light. It isn't as large as most rain umbrellas so if used in rain, it has to be not very windy - i.e. the rain should be more vertical than horizontal. In those conditions, I prefer it to a Seattle Sombrero and greatly prefer it to a parka hood as it keeps the rain off while letting my parka vent the humidity better than with the hood up. The handle isn't very long which is fine when handheld, but limits a little bit how one can rig it hands-free. I use a nylon "fishing shirt" with cargo pockets and epaulets at the shoulders. I can use those to secure it for hands-free use, but some safety pins and/or little velcro loops might be needed with a different shirt.
I used this in a Grand Canyon backpacking trip June 2025 to hike a 4.1 mile detour on the fully exposed Tonto Trail. I was comfortable throughout this section despite being there mid-day in full sun. I was concerned about adding weight, but more concerned about the sun exposure, so I made some other changes to bring my pack weight down. It took me a bit of time to adjust where I attached the umbrella so that it didn't obstruct my view, but once that was done, I only occasionally had to re-adjust briefly. The umbrella sometimes brushed against vegetation - the sound was amplified in the umbrella. This would also likely come in handy on the at GC on the sun exposed River Trail and North Kaibab on the sun exposed trail above the Box to Roaring Springs. I likely would not use it hiking beside a cliff or in more populated areas where passing safely or sharing the trail is a safety or courtesy factor.

I'm replacing the one I purchased in 2018 from GG. I've used this out countless times and has seen many rains and summer treks. Ive been thoroughly pleased with it. New puppy got ahold of it after being left out and destroyed it. I liked it so much that i had to replace it with another. Initial impressions on this new version are that, yes, it is lighter, materials are different in the cover, handle, frame and opening mechanism. Just as it is described in its product detail line. The frame has changed from fiberglass to aluminum. Frameset feels more rigid compared to older version which had been fairly flexible but has proven highly durable. The manufacturer has changed from the Euroshirm to this, to me, would be considered a lighter, generic version. Wrist loop doesnt have the softer cinch cord but elastic, thinner reflective cordage loop that would be more abrasive and otherwise non adjustable fit. Foam Handle form is much shorter, softer material and less to hold onto. Opening mechanism is a bit stiffer, even shorter in design. Use of it will smooth this out. The covering is a different type of fabric as well. It has almost a plastic-like coated texture. We'll see how well it holds up. A big perk and major reason for buying this again is that the price has stayed relatively the same under $40. Whereas , now, the Euroshirm liteflex ( what it was) is now pushing $54. The umbrella will serve its purpose but at the moment, the durability and quality I can't say has gotten any better or feels less so. The other reviews are mostly positive. Time will tell.
Overestimating our abilities and underestimating our water needs, we had to be rescued in Big Bend National Park some months back by well-equipped volunteers. The first thing they offered to me was an umbrella like this one. It cut the heat immediately and made a great impression on me. Hiking is one of my favorite activities and living in Texas with the majority of the year in outdoor activity challenging temperatures, this umbrella offers me many more weeks of outdoor exploration and enjoyment.
