Sizing & Fit
For best fit, you will need your torso length, hip and waist measurements.
Torso length:
1. Start at the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck. The best way to find this is to bend your neck and feel the first bump along the base of your neck. This bump is where you will want to start your measurement.
2. Next, you'll want to find the midpoint between your iliac crest. To find your iliac crest, cup your hip bones on both sides and find the center point on your spine. This midpoint is where your thumbs should be pointing.
3. Finally, measure from the C7 vertebra to your iliac crest. From there, you'll have your torso measurement.
Small: 16" - 18"
Medium: 18" - 20"
Large: 20" - 22"
If you're in between sizes, you can:
+ size down for more of a shoulder wrap and higher hipbelt
+ size up for a lower hipbelt fit

Hip Measurement:
1. You will want to find your iliac crest again by cupping your hip bones on both sides.
2. Then, wrap a soft measuring tape or string around the top of your iliac crest. This will tell you your hip measurement.

Waist Measurement:
1. Using the same soft measuring tape or string, find the smallest part of your midsection—typically, this is 1-2 inches above your belly button.
2. Measure around that area for your waist measurement.
Waist to Hip Ratio: Calculate your WHR by dividing your waist measurement by your hip measurement.
If it is 0.85 or lower, you will likely need a curved hipbelt. If it is higher than 0.85, you will likely need a straight hipbelt. If you're unsure which hipbelt shape will fit best, we recommend purchasing both to dial in the fit. This is because everyone's anatomy is different.

Will a Bear Canister fit inside a Mariposa?
Yes, all models of bear canisters will fit vertically in this pack! Smaller designs like the Bare Boxer and the Bear Vault 450 will fit horizontally in the main compartment.
Can I use this backpack without the hip belt?
Yes! But when using this pack without the hip belt you must remove the internal stay.

This pack is a dream! I have never carried such a comfortable pack in my life. Three day trip, not a single “rub” or bruise anywhere. The fit is only one amazing thing about the pack. The side pockets and stretch pocket make this pack so easy to organize gear. The weather had me constantly switching layers and the pockets made it so easy to easily access my puffy jacket for longer stops, gloves and pants in the AM, and a wind jacket (the Patagonia Houdini is another amazing piece of gear). I cannot say enough about the Mariposa. It is a gem! If you don’t own one, do yourself a favor and buy one right NOW!
I have been getting used to my Miraposa for a few months. enjoying the lighter weight and figuring out the best way to pack my gear.
It carries better with my bearikade in the bottom which isn't the most convenient, but allows for less strain on my neck and shoulders with the heavier weight.

Well, this pack is very comfortable and very light. So it is with great sadness that I post that after a year, this pack is in tatters.
The company has great customer service, and when I had a tear on the pack after my first trip, they replaced the whole pack. They were very helpful. However, one year later, I have four substantial holes/tears in the replacement (see the attached pics). This pack had maybe gone in 7 trips of 3-7 days.
Gossamer gear has a great design, but the materials need a serious upgrade. I would not recommend this pack for thru hiking or anyone who will put substantial wear into their pack.
This is my first UL pack. I was a little nervous about it but it’s super comfortable! The shoulder straps and hip belt is just as padded and offers a similar level of carry comfort as my Gregory and Osprey. My favorite part is the overall layout. I can actually reach my water bottle! The pocket above the water bottles is perfect for little things like a water filter or poop kit. And the other side holds my tent. It’s easy to see why this pack is so popular, I highly recommend.
After 3 short backpacking trips with a total of 4 nights, took it on a five day trip and developed big hole. It was not able to handle the heavy weight of a full bear canister.
Not enough mileage for the money. May be good as daypack but backpacking is where the weight really matters. Can it be repaired?

I love this pack! So simple and easy to pack, especially with the additional outside pouches. The Mariposa spoiled me for other backpacks - I can't go back to the clumsy heavier backpacks. Unfortunately after a couple of backpacking trips, I realized that the size small isn't small enough for me. The straps were digging into my shoulders too much. I tried adding shoulder pads - not work. In addition to being slightly too long in the torso, the straps are too wide and need more padding. I hope GG will consider making Mariposa available in XS sizes.
Just took it for a 30 mile spin this week. Pack saved me 1lb plus carried great. Was concerned with the sit pad backing being too hot but was pleasantly surprised at how it breathed and how comfortable the pack was even off trail in rough unbalanced terrain.
Just did my first trip with my new Gossamer pack and it was awesome. 47 miles over 4 days with lots of climbing. I used to get immediate pain around my collars and shoulder pains with other packs for years, but I had zero pack-related pain with this one. I’m 5’7” and the Medium 60L is a perfect fit. I love that the pad comes out as a seat. Would recommend this pack to anyone who experiences shoulder pain !
I love this backpack and it is close to perfect for me. The pivoting frame is its downfall though. You have to carefully pack this backpack for even weight distribution and pull it really really close to your body which is expected. But even then I feel the metal frame slightly shifting to one side which then pulls back on that strap a little more creating a tiny gap between my back and the pack around the shoulder. This creates a slight jostle when walking and creates a pain on that side specifically. For the longest I couldn’t figure out why the pack felt strange and my shoulder hurt. This is only noticeable after packing it with around 20lbs+ and walking distances of around 7-15 miles a day. Unfortunately that seems to be what this pack was created for and what I intended on using it for. I might try to modify it and see if there’s anyway to remedy the issue.
I'm 6' even and have a 20" torso so I went with the Mariposa 60 Medium with Medium straight belt. First trip was out at Duckabush in WA. The way out I carried the bear canister and had about 30-35lbs in the pack. The pack handled the weight quite well. I was previously using an Osprey Aether 55 so this pack was much more comfortable and already lighter than the Aether. Getting to my water bottle on the right pocket was a pretty simple 1 handed task. Pockets held the contents well. I think my only wish about the pack was if it came with a slot for a water bladder since it has a hole for the tube. Otherwise no real complaints and quite happy after the first backpack trip with it. Thanks, Gossamer Gear!
I hiked the whole AT with my Mariposa and it was great! There were a few holes in it I had to patch up by mile 1800 or so but it lasted all the way to Maine and was a joy the whole time. I got another one for my next journey!
Maiden trip of 40 miles in the Gila Wilderness. What a difference to have a lighter pack. At 55, I felt the need to lighten my load and the Mariposa60 helped me do just that. Not a huge fan of the top closing clips but I got used to it. I'm 5'6", 140 lbs and the small felt great. The included hipbelt was perhaps a bit big as I had to continually recinch it almost to the ends of the belt. Pockets are excellent and I made my own hanging cords using the loops. Super comfy at 30lbs. Can't wait to give it more use for years to come.
For reference I am 6'2" 200 lbs, 22' torso. I do a few overnight to multi night trips a year. I am by no means an "ultra-light" hiker. I like to hike and camp comfortably. When picking a hike & gear I take into consideration how long I plan on hiking per day, and based on that I'll aim for a packed weight. Normally no more than 15km/day and 24-28 lbs.
The GG Mariposa (2023 model) is my 4th?5th? backpacking pack. The old ones were too small, ripped or the backpack would pack away from my body and not up.
This review is based on a 24km overnight hike (12km in, 12km out) 28 lbs packed weight.
The Mariposa packed very well, and the gear stayed in place. I like that there are eyelids through the pack to add compression ropes/gear keepers. The top flap can expand the pack, however it was not needed on this trip, the pocket in it is spacious but it will collapse once it's clipped down, i wouldn't recommend putting anything big or that's not flat. The belt pockets are quite spacious for snacks and are easy to operate. The exterior pockets can carry more gear than i first thought, and I really like how one side is split into two, so finding smaller items was easier, nothing fell out of them when bending over. Once fully loaded, the pack felt really comfortable. Because of this pack I realised I prefer to carry a pack on my hip and not above as I used to do with my older packs. Something that was a "red flag" while researching this pack was the volume (60L split into 37L & 24L), I can confidently now say it carries my gear better than my 50L Rook, and the Mariposa had room for more, where the Rook was bursting at the seams. The gear lifters worked alright, the pack wasn't loaded enough for them to do much, I wouldn't mind if they were wider, but i believe the new models (2024 & 2025) have an updated version.
I added a water bottle carrier and a bear spray carrier, one on each shoulder strap at the bottom, they hid very well behind the hip pockets. Nothing got in the way of my arms and they were both easily accessible. The pack came with a seat pad which I used once just to test, it's a thin pad, nothing crazy about it, if I used seat pads more often, I'd probably upgrade it for something more sturdy, but I carry a chair when i go hiking (Helinox zero).
Mariposa 60L is a great pack, very comfortable with great carrying capacity, I'm very happy with my purchase. I'd recommend it to anyone!
This is a great pack. But. One quibble. The belt pockets are diabolical. They aren’t very handy, you can’t get to them on the go. And the zippers are very finicky. You need two hands to make sure you got the right angle to zip unzip.
Needed a framed, but light wt pack. Am female, about 120 lbs, 5'7"; bought small. Loaded it up to about 35 lbs and trained with it, evaluating its ability (and mine!) to carry needs for many over-night forays, and be fit enough to carry it for hours and sometimes "up". I also had to shed it in case I had ran into trouble with deep water crossings. I got a small.
It fit all items, including bulky bear vault and allowed me to carry rain items and some sandals for fast deployment in mesh front pocket. I did have sore shoulders and hope by time I depart, this issue solved. I hike with poles.
Over-all this pack accommodates all my gear, food and water and seems to fit well, although my Gregory "Deva" fits better but heavier and less usable volume.
I used my Mariposa for the first time on a section hike on the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas. I reduced my pack weight by 5 lbs since my last section hike (2.5 lbs was due to the pack itself being lighter) and I felt stronger and faster this time! The pack fit comfortably and helped me stay organized.
Loved my new Mariposa. Just took it for an overnight in the NJ Pine Barrens. The weight transfer to my hips is superb. Not a difficult or technical hike, but was able to hike 6 miles easily without discomfort at a 20 minute mile pace. I appreciated having all the external pockets for all the random little things - headlamp, glasses, lighter, bandana, toiletries, snacks - while the big compartment was used for tent, sleeping bag, pad, etc.
I am so pleased with my new Mariposa 60 backpack. It got its maiden voyage this past weekend doing a 20 mile section of the PCT from Campo to Lake Morena. It was very comfortable even with a load of 41 lbs. that included 6 liters of water.The PCT water report had not been updated since mid December. The pack weighed 29 lbs at the end of our trip. I had made so many positive comments about the pack that my wife will be upgrading to a new pack from Gossamer Gear.

118 LB, 5'6' female. ordered S pack with M belt. This past fall(2024) took on various trails in San Juans and Weminuche Wilderness in CO-- from Bayfield to around Silverton, altitude about 11,000 feet. Loaded up with food, cookware, water, food, sleep system; bear vault. Purchased a green 60L pack; slept "out" 7 nights. Previous yr's pack = a more affordable option. Did not fit as well as my "Deva" but lighter; has load lifters; internal frame. A decent pack.
I had used the previous iteration of the mariposa for about 4 years. After countless adventures it was on it's last leg and there is only so much gorilla tape can hold together. Impulsively I ordered the new mariposa, it arrived very timely and a few days later it was loaded up for it's inaugural trip: a 9 day cross country adventure in Kings Canyon. (don't judge me) The pack was fantastic and exceeded all my expectations, I had a BV500 strapped to the top loaded with food for the first few days and it never fell out, despite my best attempts while scrambling. The mesh on the back held up to the most brutal of bushwhacks and scree slides, only fraying and pilling in two spots (that is saying something, all of my clothes were much worse off). In my opinion this is the best all around backpack you can buy: it's lightweight, comfortable and practical.
Love this pack! I tested it out with a three day hike and fitted everything I needed with room to spare. It fits comfortably and I had no issues over 40kms of walking. My favourite thing about this pack is the pockets! I love pockets, and this pack has them! The hip pockets are a decent size, and the front mesh one fits a lot. The side pockets were so handy to customise the way I carry my gear. My only complaint is that if you don't use a water bladder, which I don't, it can be a tad tricky to get your drink bottles in and out of the side pocket. Other than that, I am so happy with my new pack and have many more adventures planned!
I’ve admired the Mariposa 60 from afar for a couple years but didn’t have a good reason to buy another pack … and then my pack got a small tear on my Labor Day trip and that was all the excuse I needed.
Took it out on a three day, two night fall trip in the Dolly Sods Wilderness in Eastern West Virginia and it didn’t disappoint.
The internal storage gobbled up all my fall nighttime gear with the outside pockets having a place to quickly access all my daily gear fast and easy without having to dig around.
Suspension was a dream. I actually commented to my buddy that it didn’t feel like I was carrying the weight on my hips OR shoulders. It just kind of floated and redistributed the weight as I walked.
Can’t recommend the Mariposa or any other equipment from Gossamer Gear enough.
I bought the Mariposa June 2024 and have used it on 8 backpacking trips this summer. Each time I used it, I was more impressed with the strenght, quality and attention to detail. I have fallen on it, dragged it through crevices and over rocks, and up and down rocky terrain. The buckles, zippers and straps are phenomenal - great quality! The pack is super comfy and the hip pockets are easily accessible and roomy. The only drawback is the top doesn't stay open on it's own when I pack it, but given all the positives, this is a small concern. Highly recommend!
This pack is perfection and have used on several trips. Just finished hiking all 173 miles of Tahoe Rim Trail and this pack delivered. The outside pockets’ design keeps everything needed at fingertips. The inside is plenty roomy for a multi day hike, including bear vault. Very slender women will have to watch belt sizing as it could be too big even in size small. Would buy this again.
Took my pack out on its maiden voyage and I was so impressed! The pack is incredibly comfortable and light. The way it sits on my body is perfect and feels like it was made for me! The fact it’s this light and has a frame support AND load lifters is great, and I like to use a camelback so having ann opening for the tube was a plus. If I had to give any critique I wish there was some sort of attachment you could buy to clip along the middle of the aluminum frame to add more support so that gear from a full pack doesn’t push towards your back, but it was a very small thing. I see that the benefit to not having something like that is that it saves on overall weight and you can fit more gear in the pack. I was very comfortable though and am glad I got the air flow sit light pad for more back ventilation. I hiked on a 94-degree day and my back was pretty warm but it was tolerable (especially since I was using my gossamer umbrella, which I highly recommend, too!)
I’m happy I don’t have to search for another pack. I’m sold on this one.

As an avid backpacker of 20 +years I’ve had several packs that I’ve just tolerated. This one fit me like a glove. It had pockets in just the right places. Had plenty of space and as a bonus is quite handsome. Sometimes we hope gear will be revolutionary, fork over the dough and it is just okay or not quite what we thought. This was not the case. I took it on its maiden voyage for 3 days in the Wallowa mountains and it performed well fording streams and balancing over precarious snowy ledges. This backpack is worth every penny!
30 miles with my mariposa stuffed to the brim. I now need more ultra light gear. My only complaint would be how it hits me in the small of my back and makes a little bruise. But the POCKETS! The way I can get to everything so quickly. I also love the phone case. Shoulder straps comfortable and my back does sweat badly but it doesn’t bother me. I wish there was a way to tie my chair to the bottom. I now need to rethink my chair. Getting used to the way the top closes.
5 days in the Grand Canyon on the Hermit Loop. Liked but never loved my last pack. Took a chance and brought it on my trek on its maiden voyage. It was PERFECT from beginning to end. Rub marks from my old pack three weeks ago still there but NONE from my Monarch. Not a fan, I am a super fan!!!
Just got back from a 3 day Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim in the Grand Canyon with my new pack. Held all my gear, was comfortable and the weight of the pack was a huge upgrade from my old one. I haven’t used each component part yet (back cushion or hip belt removed) but I’m sure I will soon.
I took this pack with me to the Red River Gorge for 3 days. It fit my body well and I didn't feel like I had a pack on. I really enjoyed the out side pockets for my water bottles and tent poles.
I bought my Mariposa backpack a year ago (2023) and have hiked across the Pyrenees (600 miles) and an extended John Miur Trail (250 miles) with it during last summer and Fall. Overall, I like the bag and plan on buying another one after crossing the Alps this summer (1500 miles).
I use mine with the (straight) hip belt with its 2 pockets and 2 optional strap pockets. I really like the latter ones (incl. their mesh pockets) but their placement is very high. A lower placement would be more natural.
I am glad Gossamer continues to improve upon this transitional, flexible backpack. I look forward to trying the new curved belt after my Alp trip as my current one seems to slide down too often despite tightening it repeatedly. Are the curved ones suitable for guys too? I hope the new frame will increase ventilation of my back while still being compliant with carry-on requirements in planes. I am still surprised that the default back padding is not the better ventilated one, the Air Flow SitLight as ventilation is not this backpack's strong point (even with the ventilated padding, which I convenient for sitting or sleeping).
There are features though that I would have liked that have not been integrated with this year's version:
1- Include loops on the bottom of the bag. Simple. They don't weight "anything". They would allow for carrying a sleeping pad or Tyvek sheet, thereby protecting the bottom of the bag when on the ground, and increasing capacity/flexibility/accessibility. They would also allow for faster drying of hooked clothes.
2- Add a side mesh pocket on the left side of the bag above the large pocket. Adding mesh pockets to the belt pockets would be great too. They are super practical, especially for humid items.

After field testing a bunch of widely acclaimed 55 - 65 liter packs by Osprey, HMG, Durstan, Zpacks and Granite Gear over the past 2 years, I can say with confidence that the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 is the clear winner in terms of comfort over short and long distances. When adjusted properly to one's body type, balanced load transfer to shoulders, back and hips is unmatched. Abundant lashing loops for cordage together with a big backside mesh pocket and some enormous side pockets allow for an abundance of possibilities for stuffing and attaching gear outside of the main compartment. Also has some very useful attachment sites for ice pick and trekking poles. For me, it's a nearly perfect pack.
That said, there are a few minor problems with the Mariposa. The rear mesh pocket, albeit deep, is constructed of lightweight material that will always be a single branch snag away from a big hole. Relatively thin narrow shoulder straps dig into my shoulders and necessitated the attachment of third-party strap-on foam pads. D-rings throughout the pack are inexplicably so small that it's difficult to pass through even 1/2-inch nylon webbing. Also, no shoulder strap daisy chain webbing. Finally, the pack is not constructed of waterproof material. Fortunately, I found that a majority of the pack's shortcomings had simple effective fixes.
All in all, I found in the small sized Mariposa 60, a near perfect pack for my body size, body type, stance and musculature (muscular 5' 5" 140 lb, mesomorphic with erect posture).
Great pack and great customer service! After a few days out something wasn't right... I ordered the pack size for my torso measurement but after consultation with GG customer service I was sent a larger replacement pack and I sent back the original (lightly used) pack - and they even paid for the shipping!
I find the pocket configuration more functional than a lot of the competing packs. I also like the customization options built in to the pack, e. g. loops for shock cord lashing straps and the option for the air flow back pad/sit pad (which I recommend).
Overall, great pack design and execution.

Great Pack only things i would change are the hip belt,( could be bigger you can always adjust for slack later), and the black scratchy shoulder strap material, if the pack is not perfectly adjusted it can rub against your exposed traps or neck area, if you are built a bit more muscular and that can be annoying over longer distances in hot weather especially because you tend to not wear anything on your neck. In cold weather it isn’t an issue due to having a neck gator or jacket that stops the strap from rubbing against your neck. Other than that the pack is amazing and really reasonably priced for its material quality and weight. keep it up guys i will be buying more stuff in the future
I purchased 5 different backpacks and loaded all my gear in each one (inside trash bags) and just walked around the yard. Two of them I had been eyeing for several years and I honestly couldn’t believe how much more comfortable the Gossamer Gear was from all the others. Im very pleased with the backpack and I’m going on the AT for a week in a little over a month and can’t wait to take it out for a while.
Gossamer gear is an awesome brand. Nobody can tip there comfort and service.
I have 3 bags now of Gossamer, the last one had some issues and they gave a replacement and a very friendly costumer service. (S/O to David).
Very happy to sacrifice some weight for extreme comfort.. because that’s what the Gorilla and Mariposa gives you.
Only downside I would say is that the opening are quite small if you want to get a big sleeping bag in and out. If they can change the opening these would be the perfect bags and all other companies can stop tryna make one :P

Love the Gossamer Mariposa backpack. Just purchased it and took it on a 5-day trip in the Sierras. Pack was very comfortable and I was able to balance the load well on the pack. No rubbing on the hips and shoulders like my previous pack. Would highly recommend this pack and the camera holder for the shoulder strap (very convenient).
